THE DEVIL'S PUNCH-BOWL
book design and interior illustration Published by the Dunn County Historical Society, 2017. Written by Isabelle Waterman and originally published in 1913 in The Menomite literary journal, The Devil's Punch-bowl is a fairy tale story telling a fictionalized history of the Menomonie, Wisconsin area. The main title includes custom typography based on vintage Victorian era type. The byline is set in Handbook Editor, a reclaimed typeface from the UW–Stout archives, adapted/revived by then-UW–Stout graphic design student Blake Spiegel. The digitally painted illustrations pay homage to the "golden age of illustration," specifically British fantasy illustrators such as Arthur Rackham. The project was featured on Wisconsin Public Radio's Central Time in January, 2018, along with Erika Svanoe's piece, Steampunk Suite.
