STUDENT WORK
Visual Communication Design 1
The Ohio State University This class is the first offering in the Visual Communication Design major, following the one-year Design Foundations courses. Students in this class have applied to, and been accepted to, the Visual Communication Design major through a competitive process, and follow a cohort model sequence of courses for the remainder of their education. The course covers the design and application of graphic systems in the production of visual communication projects, covering visual literacy, basic 2D design principles, and theories of communication and signs. It is taken concurrently with Intro to User Experience and Typographic Design. |
Technical Foundations 1
Bemidji State University Samples from Bemidji State University, Art + Design program, Department of Technology, Art, + Design. This course is an exploratory introduction to the traditional hand process and conceptual techniques used to create images and layouts for the design industry, meant to follow a foundations course sequence in Visual Art. Course covers the elements and principles of design, concept development + ideation, expressive typography, and color psychology. The pedagogical approach with this course is partially based on the Bauhaus/Ulm model, focusing heavily on foundations assignments. The class is large, and studio projects are challenging, so many projects are partner or team projects in order to get around this. Some assignments were adapted from existing assignments at Maryland Institute College of Art, The Ohio State University, and the University of Notre Dame. Of notable influence was Dr. Ellen Lupton, chair of the MFA Design program at MICA and author of Graphic Design: The New Basics, which I used as a very loose framework for presenting content. |
Concept Development
Art Institute of Pittsburgh This online course emphasizes the ideation and conceptualization processes in solving given problems in art and design. The course is unique in that it focuses almost entirely on the front end of the design process, before any final projects are produced. The projects utilize creative problem solving and research techniques, specifically, problem identification, analysis, brainstorming and idea refinement. Key areas of focus are on ideation, visualization, color psychology, critical analysis, and prototyping. |
Descriptive + Analytical Drawing
The Ohio State University Descriptive + Analytical Drawing is an introduction to freehand drawing as a skill to communicate characteristics of a subject represented as it pertains to Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design. This course is the first in a series of three foundation-level drawing courses open to Design majors and non-majors alike. It aims to develop skills in visual thinking, problem solving, and effective communication of ideas. In this course, students gain an introduction to observational drawing as a tool to record, analyze and communicate information about natural and manufactured subejcts within the design professions. As such, assignments are based on fundamentals of design drawing, and less broadly-defined than other observational drawing courses. Assignments are designed to familiarize students with observational contour drawing, cross-contour drawing, and tonal reductive drawing techniques, culminating in a visual narrative project based on the idea of task analysis. |
Graphic Thinking
The Ohio State University This course is the third in a series of three foundation-level drawing courses. Its context is a continuation of the media, processes, techniques and skills develvoped in the two preceding courses, and serves as an introduction to conceptual drawing and spatial thinking. Students are given the necessary tools to help them learn skills for conceptual drawing, such as perspective, spatial thinking, texture rendering, and narrative analysis. It is an introduction to drawing as a design tool and means for communication, description, and the problem solving process in the context of Industrial, Interior, and Visual Communication Design. emphasis is placed on sketching and drawing as tools to explore, analyze and communicate design concepts and design processes. I spearheaded the redesign of this course’s curriculum, content, and deliverables, with assistance from other instructors and under the guidance of full-time faculty. A version of this revised curriculum is currently in place in the foundations program at OSU. |
