In my capacity as an instructor and through my own studio's Apprenticeship program, I have individually advised and mentored undergraduate students at all levels. These students have gone on to be accepted by graduate programs at some of the nation’s top design schools, including RISD, MICA, Ohio State University, and North Carolina State University.

SELECTED EXAMPLES: UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING
Amanda Buck | www.amandabuck.com
Senior, Visual Communication Design The Ohio State University While at OSU, I was asked to consult with Amanda Buck in the development of her senior thesis project. Amanda's project was rapidly evolving, and her primary advisor, Professor R. Brian Stone, thought my expertise would be beneficial to her. The project is an educational motion graphics sequence targeted toward 4–6 year old children that introduces them to the components of music. The animated sequence deconstructs and visualizes Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Advising focused on the visual narrative of music and the relationship between visuals and music. Amanda graduated in 2008, and is an alumna of Project M, a co-founder of the design and public outreach facility PieLab, and is quickly becoming a rising star in the field. She has worked with IDEO, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, ID, GOOD, and Ologie. She was featured on GOOD's list of "25 Female Designers and illustrators We Love" and AIGA's "Design Envy" blog in 2011. Amanda was accepted to MICA's graduate program in Design for Autumn, 2013. |
Tyler Brown | www.tylerraybrown.com
Senior, Fine Art + Design Technology Bemidji State University Tyler wished to develop his skills in illustration, with a mixed media focus on traditional artmaking methods and digital technology. I worked with him to develop a course of study that could be managed independently, giving him guidelines to structure his education as he progressed, and met with him weekly to discuss technical issues, drawing techniques, and production methods. I functioned as an external member of Tyler's BFA committee as he developed the body of work leading to his BFA thesis exhibition. Tyler graduated with two degrees: a BFA in 2D media and a BS in Design Technology. He was accepted to the graduate program in Art + Design at North Carolina State University for Autumn, 2012. |
Brandon Overland | brandonoverland
Junior & Senior, Design Technology Bemidji State University After moving to Bemidji and beginning my affiliation with BSU, I was asked to consult on an independent study project of Brandon Overland. Brandon wished to develop his skills in illustration, with a focus on digital techniques and character development. I worked with him to develop a course of study that could be managed independently, giving him guidelines to structure his education as he progressed, and met with him weekly to discuss technical issues, drawing techniques, and production methods. I continued to meet with Brandon after this period, assisting him through portfolio development, and the application processes for internships and graduate programs. Brandon earned his BS in Design in 2011 and was accepted to the graduate program at Ohio State for Autumn, 2011. He has been a graphic designer for SMC Ltd. and an interactive designer for Signature Consultants. |
